Bau mulut atau halitosis bisa mengganggu kepercayaan diri saat harus berkomunikasi dengan orang lain. Kabar baiknya, bau mulut bisa diredam dengan\u00a0probiotik\u00a0atau bakteri baik yang dapat ditemukan dalam berbagai makanan-makanan fermentasi.<\/p>\n<p>Yang termasuk\u00a0makanan probiotik\u00a0di antaranya yogurt, tempe, kimchi, dan natto. Peran probiotik dalam mengatasi\u00a0bau mulut\u00a0diungkapkan melalui sebuah studi yang dipublikasikan pada jurnal BMJ Open. Berdasarkan studi, tim peneliti mengungkapkan bahwa bakteri yang dapat membantu mengatasi bau mulut adalah Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus reuteri, Streptococcus salivarius, dan Weissella cibaria.<\/p>\n<p>Tim peneliti mengungkapkan, senyawa sulfur volatil merupakan penyebab utama munculnya masalah bau mulut. Senyawa ini diproduksi oleh bakteri di mulut sebagai hasil dari pencampuran antara bakteri dan sisa makanan. Sisa makanan ini biasanya berkaitan dengan kondisi gusi dan kebersihan gigi yang buruk.<\/p>\n<p>Sejauh ini, ada empat hal yang bisa dilakukan untuk meredakan bau mulut. Untuk membuktikan hal ini, tim peneliti melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut dengan melibatkan 278 orang partisipan dari tujuh uji klinis berbeda.<\/p>\n<p>Selama studi berlangsung, tingkat keparahan bau mulut para partisipan diukur dengan kadar senyawa sulfur volatil yang terdeteksi di dalam mulut partisipan atau dengan skor OLP. Skor OLP digunakan untuk mengukur bau mulut dalam jarak yang berbeda-beda dari posisi mulut.<\/p>\n<p>Hasil studi menunjukkan, pemberian probiotik tampak menurunkan skor OLP partisipan secara signifikan. Selain itu, partisipan yang mendapatkan probiotik juga memiliki kadar senyawa sulfur volatil yang lebih rendah, akan tetapi efek ini hanya bertahan maksimal empat pekan.<\/p>\n<p>Di sisi lain, probiotik tampak tak memberikan efek terhadap skor\u00a0<em>tongue coating<\/em>\u00a0atau indeks plak pada para partisipan. Hal ini dinilai dapat menekan produksi produk sampingan berbau dari bakteri yang memicu bau mulut.<\/p>\n<p>Namun, perlu diketahui bahwa jumlah partisipan dalam studi ini terbilang kecil dan sebagian uji klinis tak memiliki data yang lengkap.
