Berbekal pengalaman dan pengetahuan selama di Badan Tenaga Nuklir Nasional (Batan), Arwin berinovasi menghadirkan varietas kedelai dengan umur tanam yang sangat pendek.<\/p>\n<p>Oktober tahun lalu Arwin mendapatkan kabar yang menggembirakan. Sidang pelepasan varietas yang digelar Kementerian Pertanian (Kementan) memutuskan dua varietas kedelai inovasi dari Arwin dinyatakan lolos. Ibarat ujian skripsi, inovasinya sekarang menunggu wisuda. Setelah itu, baru bisa dilepas kepada petani untuk ditanam secara masal.<\/p>\n<p>Pria kelahiran Padang, 30 Mei 1967, itu mengaku begitu lega. Sebab, riset kedelainya berlangsung cukup lama. \u201dRisetnya dimulai sejak 2012 lalu,\u201d katanya kepada\u00a0<em>Jawa Pos<\/em>\u00a0Jumat lalu (29\/1). Arwin kini menunggu keluarnya surat keputusan (SK) dari menteri pertanian. Dia memperkirakan beberapa minggu lagi SK tersebut keluar.<\/p>\n<p>Ada dua varietas kedelai unggul hasil riset Arwin. Yakni, kedelai Sugentan 1 dan Sugentan 2. Kata Sugentan adalah akronim dari Super Genjah Batan. Genjah sendiri berarti cepat berbuah. Dalam risetnya, dia bertindak sebagai pemulia utama. Itu adalah sebutan untuk peneliti utama di Batan yang khusus meneliti varietas tanaman.<\/p>\n<p>Alumnus Fakultas Pertanian Univeristas Andalas Padang periode 1991 itu menjelaskan, kedelai Sugentan 1 dan Sugentan 2 berasal dari indukan kedelai Argomulyo. Dia sengaja memilih indukan kedelai tersebut karena disukai masyarakat dan sudah tersebar di kalangan petani. Indukan Argomulyo itu kemudian disinari radiasi gama untuk mendapatkan varietas yang dia inginkan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dSejak awal riset, kami menetapkan ingin mendapatkan varietas kedelai yang masa tanamnya cepat dan tahan terhadap hama. Meskipun umur tanamnya pendek, produktivitasnya tetap tinggi. Menurut dia, perpaduan tiga kriteria itu cukup ideal dan bisa menarik minat petani untuk menanam kedelai.<\/p>\n<p>Setelah menentukan indukan, Arwin kemudian menetapkan dosis atau kadar sinar gama yang akan ditembakkan. Dia mengungkapkan, riset varietas\u00a0kedelai\u00a0berbasis nuklir di Batan sudah berlangsung lama. Karena itu, Batan memiliki ukuran dosis sinar gama yang tepat untuk menghasilkan varietas kedelai baru.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dDosis sinar gama kalau terlalu rendah tidak bisa menghasilkan varietas baru. Tetapi kalau terlalu tinggi, kedelainya mati. Tidak bisa ditanam,\u201d jelasnya. Rentang radiasi sinar gama untuk kedelai adalah 250 sampai 350 gray (Gy). Untuk risetnya, Arwin menggunakan dosis sinar gama sebanyak 250 Gy.<\/p>\n<p>Saat itu, Arwin menyinari sekitar setengah kilogram biji kedelai Argomulyo. Setelah disinari radiasi\u00a0nuklir\u00a0selama beberapa menit, dia menanam biji atau benih tersebut. Peneliti di Pusat Aplikasi Isotop dan Radiasi (PAIR) Batan itu menegaskan, butir benih kedelai yang diradiasi itu harus ditanam semua.<\/p>\n<p>Dia menegaskan, teknologi rekayasa genetika yang dia gunakan adalah menyinari atau meradiasi dengan sinar gama. Sehingga terjadi perubahan DNA kedelai. Bukan penambahan DNA baru. Perubahan akibat radiasi gama itu terjadi pada inti selnya.<\/p>\n<p>Karena yang mengalami perubahan inti sel, saat pertama ditanam belum ada perubahan signifikan. Proses tersebut dilakukan sampai panen. Setelah itu, hasil panen ditanam kembali. Nah, pada penanaman generasi kedua, baru terlihat perbedaannya. \u201dKita pilih generasi pada mutan (generasi, Red) kedua ini,\u201d katanya.<\/p>\n<p>Pada penanaman generasi kedua tersebut, terlihat perbedaan yang mencolok. Mulai tanaman kedelai yang sangat tinggi atau sebaliknya, sangat pendek. Kemudian, kedelai lebih cepat berbunga. Kedelai yang cepat berbunga itu kemudian ditandai dengan tali rafia. Sebab, kedelai yang cepat berbunga tersebut hampir pasti cepat panen atau genjah. Sesuai dengan kriteria yang dicari Arwin.<\/p>\n<p>Setelah semua pohon kedelai yang cepat berbunga ditandai, tinggal ditunggu sampai panen. Lalu, bijinya ditanam kembali sampai menghasilkan tanaman kedelai yang secara tampilan fisiknya seragam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dKami baru menemukan tanaman ideal di generasi ketujuh,\u201d jelasnya.<\/p>\n<p>Pada generasi ketujuh tersebut, tanaman kedelainya cepat berbunga dan tinggi pohonnya seragam. Selain itu, dengan pengamatan selama penanaman, kedelai tersebut memiliki ketahanan terhadap hama dan produktivitas tinggi. Arwin menegaskan, proses radiasi hanya dilakukan satu kali pada benih pertama.<\/p>\n<p>Arwin mengatakan, usia tanam rata-rata kedelai Argomulyo adalah 85 hari atau hampir tiga bulan. Setelah melalui rekayasa genetika berbasis sinar gama, usia tanam menjadi 65 hari untuk kedelai Sugentan 1 dan 67 hari bagi kedelai Sugentan 2.<\/p>\n<p>Selain itu, produktivitasnya tinggi. Produksi Sugentan 1 rata-rata 2,54 ton\/hektare. Dengan potensi hasil panen mencapai 3,04 ton\/hektare. Hasil panen kedelai Sugentan 2 rata-rata 2,55 ton\/hektare dan potensi hasil 3,01 ton\/hektare. \u201dPotensi itu artinya jika ditanam dengan pupuk dan pemeliharaan yang ideal,\u201d katanya.<\/p>\n<p>Peraih penghargaan Menristek pada 2013 itu mengatakan, dengan keunggulan masa tanam pendek dan tingkat produktivitas tinggi, para petani diharapkan tertarik untuk menanam kedelai tersebut. Sehingga dalam jangka panjang turut mendukung peningkatan produksi kedelai nasional.<\/p>\n<p>Arwin mengatakan, pemerintah tidak mungkin memaksa petani beralih dari menanam padi ke kedelai. Sebab dari sisi ekonomi, menanam padi lebih menguntungkan ketimbang kedelai. Kondisi itulah yang mengakibatkan produktivitas kedelai nasional tidak bisa ditingkatkan secara signifikan.<\/p>\n<p>Namun, dia menjelaskan, ada masa saat petani tidak menanam apa-apa di sawahnya. Terutama musim kemarau yang sulit air. Durasinya hanya sekitar dua bulan. Petani tidak bisa bertanam padi karena minim air. Petani juga tidak bisa menanam jagung atau sejenisnya karena usia tanamnya lebih dari dua bulan atau bahkan sampai tiga bulan. \u201dBanyak yang sawahnya dibiarkan saja.
